A depot town under a ridge
In the 1880s the Nashville & Knoxville Railroad built a depot here on land bought from Joel Algood, a circuit rider and early settler, and the stop took his name; the area had been called Algood's Old Fields. Algood first incorporated in 1901, repealed its charter two years later, and reincorporated in 1911. The town sits at the base of Algood Mountain, one of several low ridges that step up from the Highland Rim to the Cumberland Plateau, and covers about 4.09 square miles.
Trees on slopes
Lots that climb toward the ridge make felling harder: a log on a slope wants to roll, and equipment can't always reach. Expect a contractor to look at access before pricing, and ask how they'll handle the wood.
Whose rules
Cookeville's tree ordinance and brush pickup cover the City of Cookeville. For trees on city property or by the street in Algood, ask the City of Algood. Tennessee 811 and the state's burn permit season apply here too.
