About Sparta
Sparta was established in 1809 as the county seat for White County and grew on the stage road between Knoxville and Nashville; it nearly became the state capital, losing to Nashville by one vote. The Fisk brothers built the Sparta Rock House inn in the 1830s, now a state historic site. The Calfkiller River runs through town, and the city's nickname is Bluegrass USA.
Trees by the river
Trees along the Calfkiller's banks can be awkward to reach with a truck or lift, so expect a contractor to want to see the spot before pricing.
Whose rules
Sparta is in White County, not Putnam, and Cookeville's ordinance doesn't apply. Ask the City of Sparta about trees on public land. White County isn't on the state's list of counties that require a home improvement license, and Tennessee's burn permit season and 811 rules apply here too.
Other towns on this site: Algood, Baxter, Monterey, and Cookeville itself. See every town.
Common questions
Does Cookeville's tree ordinance apply in Sparta?
No. Sparta is a separate city in White County. Ask the City of Sparta.
