King of the Mountain
A settlement grew up around the Standing Stone, a landmark for travelers on Avery's Trace. The Cumberland Mountain Coal Company laid out the town, named it Monterey, "King of the Mountains," because coal was king, and incorporated it in 1893. The sources of the Calfkiller and Falling Water rivers lie just west of town.

Plateau weather
Monterey averages about 16 inches of snow a year, mostly in January and February, and about 64 inches of precipitation. Snow load and wind can bring limbs down; if one is on a line, call the utility before anyone cuts.
